Net-Zero Basque
Industrial Super Cluster

The Basque Net Zero Industrial Supercluster aims to accelerate the path to net zero emissions in the Basque Country, fostering energy supply decarbonization and energy efficiency in the industrial sectors and creating market opportunities based on the scale-up of the new technologies and innovative services.

An initiative part of the World Economic Forum project “Transitioning industrial cluster towards net-zero”.

Net-Zero Basque Industrial Super Cluster

The Basque Government, through Spri Group, in collaboration with the two main energy companies in the Basque Country, Iberdrola and Petronor, and the support of the 16 industrial clusters, is promoting an industrial "super cluster" that aims to accelerate the path to net zero emissions in the Basque Country, fostering energy supply decarbonization and energy efficiency in the industrial sectors and creating market opportunities based on the scale-up of the new technologies and innovative services.

With almost 80% of the global economy committed today to achieving net-zero emissions, action is urgently needed to meet this ambitious target. Net-Zero Basque Industrial Super Cluster aims to speed up processes and achieve this goal, by focusing first on the decarbonisation of energy supply and energy efficiency in the Basque industrial sector.

The initiative will have a positive impact on the creation of qualified jobs in new technologies for the deployment of innovative solutions and will be key in improving the competitiveness of Basque industry.

The initiative will also create market opportunities based on the scale-up of new technologies and innovative services.

16 industrial clusters

The initiative integrates the Industrial associations already operating in the Basque Country, enabling and facilitating coordination and synergies within the key Industries.

Key partners

net-zero-petronor-repsol

Petronor-Repsol is committed to the decarbonization of the economy through its own processes and products (commitment to reach net zero before 2050), with the production and use of decarbonized fuels, such as synthetic fuels, advanced biofuels and renewable hydrogen and electricity, promoting the circular economy and based on technological neutrality and competitiveness.

net-zero-iberdrola

Iberdrola is committed to decarbonizing the economy through greater electrification and the use of decarbonized fuels, such as green hydrogen, where electrification is not possible or not yet competitive enough.

A great opportunity to accelerate the path towards zero emissions by generating synergies, sharing risks and attracting investment

The strategy

The Net-Zero Basque Industrial Super Cluster is one of the first four regional projects invited to take part in the project promoted by the World Economic Forum to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, aimed to offer experiences and good practices and exploit synergies between industrial regions that adopt commitments for the transition.

This project will place Euskadi among the 4 most energy efficient countries in Europe. And that will come to reality through innovation, hand in hand with technology and digitization across all industries.

The Net-Zero Basque Industrial Super Cluster seeks to turn this decarbonisation objective into an opportunity for technological and industrial development in the Basque Country, promoting existing capacities and generating new ones.

// Advantages

Super Cluster because…

  • It integrates the Industrial Clusters that already operate in the Basque Country, enabling and facilitating coordination and synergies within key Industries.
  • It involves collaboration and engagement between the Government and key energy companies, to develop and implement roadmaps.
  • It will start working with the five Industries that cover up to 67.1% of total GHG emissions in the area.
  • It will allow scaling net zero technologies, implement digital services
  • And create jobs.
