The Basque Digital Innovation Hub (BDIH) is a non-profit initiative that responds to the Basque Smart Specialisation Strategy RIS3 Euskadi (defined and implemented within the framework of the Science and Technology Plan PCTI 2030 – RIS3 Euskadi and the Industrialisation Plan) to support the business fabric in the experimentation of digital and sustainable innovations. It is a connected network of advanced manufacturing assets and services. Infrastructure for training, research, testing and validation available to companies. It is co-owned by R&D Centres, Vocational Training Centres and Universities and supported by regional public institutions. It is internationally connected with other European HUBs.
In an increasingly unpredictable global context (pandemics, armed conflicts, rising raw material and freight costs, etc.), the need for a strategic local supplier base is becoming ever more important. The initiative was created to find out which technologies or components are missing in our value chain, with the aim of working to attract strategic suppliers to the Basque Country.
The initiative seeks strategic suppliers in the RIS3 field to be incorporated into our ecosystem and fill any potential gaps that may exist in the value chain. The service is designed to attract both specific suppliers of interest to Basque companies, as well as areas or technologies where companies do not have an identified supplier and a local supplier would be highly beneficial for their business.
The initiative has been developed in collaboration with key clusters and business associations in the Basque Country.
If you are interested in participating in this initiative or would like further information, you can contact the Invest in the Basque Country team using the form at the bottom of the Strategic Supplier Attraction service page.

It is an initiative created to generate new opportunities for collaboration between SMEs and startups; opportunities based on a model of joint sectoral challenges posed between the participating SMEs.
Selection phase: startup evaluation and SME-startup matching
The startup selection process will be carried out in two phases: the evaluation phase and the matching phase.
The startup evaluation phase is in turn structured in two sub-phases:
Evaluation criteria |
1) Value proposition (40%) |
Level of innovation of the proposed solution. |
Maturity level of the proposal (market stage of the technology, product or service). |
Impact of the proposed solution on the SME and the market. |
Advantages of the proposed solution over market alternatives. |
2) Promotion team (20%) |
Training and professional competencies of the promotion team. |
Experience and knowledge of the sector. |
3) Adaptation to the challenges posed (40%) |
Fulfilment of the technical requirements of the challenge. |
Project description level (phases, scope, objectives, examples). |
Scalability of the proposed solution to SMEs with similar needs. |
A plan and model is deployed to identify shared needs/opportunities among the participating SMEs, which can be transmitted in the form of a challenge to the startups, then materialising them through the joint execution of pilot projects aimed at testing technological solutions that can be scaled up later on.
It facilitates their access to the market as well as to funding. This is mainly done by connecting them with SMEs linked to the specialisation sectors and areas of opportunity of the Basque Country Specialisation Strategy, through collaboration with the Cluster Development Organisations (ODC [Organizaciones Dinamizadoras de Clúster]) that represent these sectors, such as: Hegan, Basque Food Cluster, ACICAE, Basque Health Cluster, ERAIKUNE, ACE, MAFEX, AFV, Habic, FMV, Aclima, Clúster del Papel de EuskadiI, SIDEREX, Uptek (AFM), GAIA, and MLC Uniport.

It is a participatory workshop or working session where SMEs participating in the initiative develop different collaborative actions to achieve common results.
They are joint sessions with SMEs and startups, where participants present their proposals through a presentation and expose an idea or a business in a defined place and amount of time.
It consists of collaborative work between the Evaluation and Coordination Team and the SMEs that, supported by an expert, will analyse and select the proposals of the startups that best fit the challenges and specificities proposed. This selection will be the starting point for developing potential business relationships that will lead to the signing of a project contract.
The B2B SME Connection facilitates networking between startups and SMEs, with a matching system that streamlines interaction between interested parties.
The second edition of the initiative will be carried out as a competitive activity, in which the ODCs interested in participating in the dynamics proposed by the programme will submit a “cluster application” to the BIND 4.0 Team that will be the value of a group of SMEs willing to participate in the programme, and consequently, SMEs that accept these rules.
For the participation of each SME in the programme, the ODC will have previously sent an application highlighting a group of SMEs with a common problem that they intend or aspire to solve with the help of a startup. This problem must be shared, and the intention is for it to be subsequently transferred to the market in the form of a joint sectoral challenge.
