Type of software that processes the information that would be processed by a physical sensor based on available information. It takes readings from different devices and learns to interpret the relationship between variables.

Unlike in the real physical world, virtual sensors can be placed on demand in a simulation model. For example, physical sensors cannot be placed as close as wished to a high level radiation site because they would burn, and in this case virtual sensors can be used. Or they could also be useful if several parts are assembled together and there is not enough space to place a sensor. There are also other reasons for using virtual sensors, such as cost and reliability.
