In cryptography, encryption is the process of encoding information, converting plaintext into ciphertext. Ideally, only authorized parties can decipher a ciphertext back to plaintext and access the original information, using a code that only they know.
There was a time when encryption systems were used mainly in military messaging, because they were used for confidential correspondence. However, they have been in use for many years in all fields of computing, such as the Internet and e-commerce, mobile phones, wireless microphones, Bluetooth devices, ATMs, etc.
