Fundamental structure of a programme, set of programmes or a computer application. Each structure comprises the software elements, the relationships between them, and the element and relationship properties.

A software system's architecture resembles of a building's architecture, functions as a model for the system and for the software being developed, and reflects the tasks to be performed by the design teams. It attempts to make fundamental decisions that are specific to the structure, which are difficult to modify after implementation.
