Three CIC biomaGUNE scientists included in the Thomson Reuters international list of Highly Cited Researchers

CIC biomaGUNE researchers Luis Liz-Marzán, Wolfgang Parak and Maurizio Prato have been included in the latest edition of the Highly Cited Researchers (HCR) list, compiled by Thomson Reuters, an international benchmark company in the field of scientific publications, which recognises the most cited researchers internationally. Their inclusion in this list highlights the recognition and international prestige of the researchers who perform their work at the Cooperative Research Centre, specialising in innovation in biomaterials and located in San Sebastian.

Luis Liz-Marzán is Scientific Director of CIC biomaGUNE and a researcher in the Ikerbasque programme, designed to attract and retain talent in the Basque Country. His research in the field of nanoparticle synthesis and assembly, the development of nanoparticle-based sensing and diagnostic tools and nanoplasmonics (study of nano scale optical phenomena) is internationally recognised. Dr. Liz-Marzán has been included in the Chemistry and Materials Science sections of the Highly Cited Researchers list. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Santiago de Compostela and did post-doctoral work at the Van’t Hoff Laboratory of Utrecht University (The Netherlands). Highlights of his extensive list of scientific awards are the Humboldt Research Award (2010), Dupont Prize for Science (2010), Burdinola Award (2011), ECIS-Rhodia Award (2013), Medal of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry (2014) and King Jaime I Award in Basic Research (2015). He is a full professor on leave from the University of Vigo and has also been a visiting professor at several universities and research institutions worldwide.

Wolfgang Parak has headed the Bioengineered Particles group at CIC biomaGUNE since 2013, holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU) in Munich (Germany) and is a Full Professor of Experimental Physics at the Philipps University of Marburg, Germany. Dr. Parak has made outstanding contributions in the field of biological applications of nanomaterials and is a renowned expert in the use of nanomaterials inside living organisms, as well as in the development of new medical applications for nanomaterials. He is included in the Materials Science section of the Highly Cited Researchers list.

Maurizio Prato has been leading the Carbon Nanobiotechnology group at CIC biomaGUNE since October 2015, conducting his work as a researcher in the Ikerbasque programme. His international prestige has been endorsed with numerous awards, such as the Federchimica Prize (1995), Italian Chemical Society National Prize for Research (2002), Angelo Mangini Medal (2009), Blaise Pascal Medal for Materials Science, awarded by the European Academy of Sciences and (2013) and Giulio Natta Gold Medal, awarded by the Italian Chemical Society (2014). Since 2013 Dr. Prato has been an honorary professor at the Xi’an Jiaotong University (China) and in 2014 received an honorary doctorate in Materials Science and Technology from the University of Rome Tor Vergata. His inclusion in the Highly Cited Researchers list is in the Chemistry section.

A list with international prestige 

The scientific publisher Thomson Reuters compiles the Highly Cited Researchers list by using for measurement the highest number of reports officially validated by Essential Science Indicators, a prestigious analytical resource that assesses and classifies scientific performance and covers around 8,500 publications from around the world. The list gives the researchers named great prestige, because the citations come from researchers belonging to their own scientific fields.
