The legendary American computer game designer who created such critically acclaimed games as Monkey Island or Grim Fandango is coming to Bilbao on 30 November to attend the Fun & Serious Award Gala and pick his Lifetime Achievement Honorary Award.
Fun & Serious Game Festival, the largest video game festival in Europe, is glad to announce that this year’s Honorary Award will go to Tim Schafer, a master in game worldbuilding and storytelling. Mr Schafer will pick his prize at the Fun & Serious Award Gala, to be held in Bilbao on November 30. The F&S Honorary Award comes as a recognition to a brilliant career in the gaming industry, filled with amazing storytelling and the creation of unforgettable characters, such as would-be pirate Guybrush Threepwood of the Monkey Island series or skull-faced Manny Calavera of the neo-noir adventure game Grim Fandango, among others.
‘Schafer was one of the first to take up innovation in his daily work, putting it to brilliant uses. His scripts, complex and humorous, are his hallmark. To us, they have contributed to the development of graphic adventure games as a genre in its own right,’says Fun & Serious Game Festival Director Alfonso Gómez.
The F&S Honorary Award gives recognition to excellence in the work done by key figures in the video game industry – whose turnover in 2014 went beyond USD75,000 million, coming close to the film industry, with USD90,000 million. The Honorary Award is granted at the F&S Award Gala, the apex of the Festival, where all the awards are given out to the best video games of the year.
In addition to his powerful creativity and amazing game designer skills, Mr Schafer has outstanding entrepreneurial abilities. After a successful career at the American video game publisher and licensor LucasArts, Schafer set up his own studio, Double Fine, where he continued to tell great stories and create marvellous characters. Schafer has been involved in the development of more than 25 games that are now part of the history of the gaming industry.
‘We’re glad and honoured to have Tim with us at the Fun & Serious Award Gala, and we know this is only the beginning. We’re having the 5thedition of our Festival this year, so we’re working on a very special programme, with lots of surprises,’Mr Gómez adds.
