A Basque consortium develops the Biolca application to assess more sustainable fuels

The Biolca web tool is software that performs life cycle analysis of fuels, including their environmental, social and economic impact, in order to determine the most sustainable alternatives. The application, developed as part of a European project, is aimed at reducing emissions by road transport.

The consortium made up of Ekotek, Tecnalia, Gaiker-IK4, Factor CO2, Cespa-Ferrovial and Bilbao City Council has developed the Biolca web tool, an application aimed at improving sustainability in the transport sector. The project is based on the fact that the solution to reducing future greenhouse gas emissions is not based on a single fuel but rather on the combination of those that exist.

In order to determine the most sustainable alternatives, the Basque consortium has developed software capable of determining the impact of gasoline, diesel, bio-ethanol, biodiesel, electricity, natural gas, LPG and kerosene. The leading innovative feature of the tool is the application of Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) methodology, including the environmental, social and economic impacts of each energy source from its extraction or generation through to use. The web application has been successfully validated through a pilot in which Bilbao City Council took part, involving 147 buses in the Bilbobus network, and Cespa-Ferrovial, through eight waste collectors at its facilities in Barakaldo.

This project is part of the European Life Biolca initiative, focusing on minimising the environmental, economic and social impacts of the transport sector. As the project states, this sector is responsible for 25% of European greenhouse gases, with road transport as the sector that has most increased its CO2 emissions.
