Reducing costs is one of the primary on-going concerns of companies, but when this goal is combined with attaining higher product quality, the task becomes doubly interesting for producers. Saving on component manufacturing costs while simultaneously improving component quality is the aim of Nanotun3D, a European project in which CEIT-IK4 is participating member. The project expects to provide a savings of up to 40%-50% in material costs and a 15%-40% improvement in mechanical properties of components.
The project is geared toward sectors such as aerospace, space, industrial equipment, etc. Specifically, the project will develop a complete processing route for manufacturing components made from a Ti-based composite reinforced with ceramic nanoparticles via additive manufacturing techniques, from the production of the composite powder to the manufacture of the final demonstrator.
CEIT-IK4’s role focuses on manufacturing the Ti-based composite reinforced with ceramic nanoparticles, which encompasses two lines. The first line is to develop a gas atomisation system that will make it possible to directly fabricate the composite powder. The second line is to manufacture a titanium cylindrical electrode that has nanoparticles embedded inside it, where the subsequent application of a technique known as EIGA (Electrode Induction Melting Gas Atomization) melts the electrode and produces a metal powder.
Among that various research lines that make up Nanotun3D, one of the highlights is the implementation of a health, safety and environmental (HSE) management system for the use of nanoparticles.
The project is being financed by the European Union through the Horizon 2020 programme and has a budget of nearly 3 million euros. Along with Ceit-IK4, other participating members are Laurentia Technologies SLL, Universitat Politécnica de Valencia, Zoz GmbH (Germany), TLS Technik GmbH & Co., Spezialpulverg KG (Germany) and APR SRL (Italy).[:]
