The Basque Country, a pioneering Europe region in urban sustainability and efficiency

The Basque Country has been chosen by the Committee of the Regions as an example of a pioneering region in urban sustainability and efficiency. Arantxa Tapia, Basque Government Minister for Economic Development and Infrastructures, explained the Basque model for Smart Cities in Brussels.

At a conference entitled “Basque Industry, efficiency and sustainability”, the Minister emphasised that the Basque Country has a smart specialisation strategy whose priority areas are advanced manufacturing, energy and health. She expressed the Basque Country’s commitment to go beyond oil use by 2050 and increase consumption of renewable energy to reach 21% of the total by 2030.
