Domestic appliances firm Candy, located in the Gipuzkoan town of Bergara, has announced that it is studying a reindustrialisation plan that consists of using its facilities to manufacture electric scooters.

The Candy reindustrialisation project consists of producing 800 and 1,000 watt electric scooters, with a range of 95 kilometres and a battery charge lasting between 3 and 6 hours, for the Luxembourg-based company Optimize.

The plan foresees that 74 members of the former Candy Hoover workforce, who have the right skills for electric scooter production, will be hired by Optimize.

This project has arisen following the agreement reached in February for the entry of a new investor in Candy, that was launching a project to keep the plant operating, after the domestic appliances manufacturer announced that the business was closing at the end of last year.

Representatives of the Regional Government of Gipuzkoa (Diputación Foral de Gipuzkoa) have been involved in the negotiations and will shortly present a full timeline of the operation.
