This month Donostia-San Sebastián will incorporate the first fully electric urban bus, wholly manufactured in Spain by Irizar, into its bus fleet. Irizar is also due to deliver two similar units to the city of Barcelona.
The company from Ormaiztegi (Gipuzkoa), which celebrates its 125th anniversary this year, held a public event in San Sebastián to present the result of its star project, the Irizar i2e, the all-electric urban bus built entirely with technology developed by companies in the Group.
The General Manager of Irizar, José Manuel Orcasitas, and the Project Manager, Héctor Olabegogeasakoetxea, presented the characteristics of this project to a large group of guests. They were accompanied by Gerardo Lertxundi, General Manager of DBus, the municipal transport company which is to use the new model.
Although several cities have already tested prototypes of 100% electric buses, most of them built by Chinese companies, from 20 July San Sebastián will become one of the first European cities to bring an electric bus into service without any kind of restriction.
It will initially operate on the more level or flatter routes, line lines 21 or 17, but will also be tested on the more demanding routes, like those that connect the centre with the city’s higher neighbourhoods.
