Development of new materials for the design and manufacture of catalytic membrane reactors

Increasing the production rate while maintaining the same product quality and reducing costs is the goal of the DEMCAMER initiative, in which Tecnalia is just one of the participants.


The DEMCAMER initiative proposes a response to the paradigm of the European chemical industry: to increase the production rate while maintaining the same product quality and reducing the costs that exist in the combination of reaction and separation processes in a single unit called “Catalytic Membrane Reactor” (CMR).

Process intensification (PI) will probably be the next revolution in the chemical industry. It consists of chemical engineering development that leads to substantially smaller, cleaner, safer and more efficient technology.

Obtaining pure hydrogen

The Catalytic Membrane Reactor enhances performance, process efficiency, cost effectiveness (by reducing the number of steps) and sustainability. Its goal is to improve efficiency in obtaining pure hydrogen, liquid hydrocarbons and ethylene though for processes: Autothermal Reforming (ATR), Fischer-Tropsch (FTS), Water Gas Shift (WGS), and Oxidative Coupling of Methane (OCM).

Other companies taking part in DEMCAMER, in addition to Tecnalia, are VITO, HYGEAR, TU/e, HYBRID CATALYSTS, UNICAL, CERPOTECH, HÖGANÄS, INERIS, QUANTIS, CSIC, ABENGOA, GUASCOR, BIC, FRAUNHOFER, RKV and TOTAL.
