eMedica, Vicomtech-IK4 technology centre, Donostia University Hospital and Biodonostia Health Research Institute have collaborated in developing a system, called eVida (eLife), that enables personalised prostheses to be manufactured for patients with a high risk of abdominal aortic aneurysm rupture.
Aortic aneurysm consists of the dilation and weakening of the wall of the aorta, the most important artery in the human body. The usual treatment consists of the placement of a stent at the point of the artery affected by this problem. This prosthesis frees the walls of the aorta from the pressure of blood flow, thereby preventing rupture.
Sometimes, however, the aneurysm affects a too large stretch of artery or is located at points where it is not possible to insert a conventional stent. In these cases it is necessary to make personalised prostheses that are very difficult to design because it is necessary to know their exact measurements.
eVida offers an advanced stent planning tool that provides a novel solution to this problem, enabling personalised prostheses to be manufactured more quickly and safely than with conventional methods.
