The Barrié Foundation makes its Science Fund methodology available to CIC nanoGUNE in order to transfer results to the market. This is an adaptable road map focusing on the phases of assessment, proof of concept and commercialisation of scientific and technological results.
José María Arias Mosquera, president of the Barrié Foundation and José María Pitarke, CEO of CIC nanoGUNE, today signed an agreement that will allow nanoGUNE to implement the methodology that the Barrié Foundation has developed for the transfer of scientific and technological results to the market through its Science Fund.
As its president explained, “the Barrie Foundation Science Fund, based on the philosophy of ‘learning and improving by doing’, has served as a tool for the design, development and validation of a proven practical methodology, which is now available to nanoGUNE. In this way, we will fully meet our goal of designing and modelling new routes that can be replicated by other agents.” The Science Fund was created in 2011 and is a tool for establishing a methodology and creating a bridge so that world-class research reaches the market and the market gives back in the form of patents, licenses, contracts with companies, etc. “The aim of this agreement is to permeate and adapt a methodology, a roadmap, which can facilitate the process of development and commercialization of research results in our environment,” said José M. Pitarke. “While it is true that due to the diverse nature of the results and their potential application in different markets, there are no simple recipes in the field of technology transfer, this tool allows us to look at experiences that have worked in certain areas and adapt them to our own developments,” he added.
The agreement between the Barrié Foundation and nanoGUNE will allow nanoGUNE’s researchers in San Sebastian to follow this adaptable road map. This will enable them to deepen their knowledge about the characteristics and requirements of the process of the transfer of results to the market, so they can anticipate and foresee the possibilities of transfer right from the moment when the research projects are designed. To achieve this, “our intention is to learn their methodology and make it available to our researchers so that, within the centre itself, the needs and difficulties that potential exploitable results might come up against can be foreseen from the beginning, thereby facilitating their development,” Pitarke explained. Moreover, given the collaborative nature of nanoGUNE, “we will incorporate this methodology into collaborative projects, either through Basque support programmes for R&D and technological development (Basque Government, Regional Government of Gipuzkoa), or international programmes contemplating commercial exploitation (Horizon 2020),” concluded Pitarke.
A Science Fund to encourage innovation
The Barrié Foundation Science Fund funds phases of assessment, proof of concept and commercialization of scientific and technological results generated in the Galician research system with commercial potential led by highly accredited scientists and researchers. It also acts as a strategic partner in the evaluation of research results, in their commercial exploitation and dissemination to society, and it is supported by the advice of a group of international experts, including Oxford University’s company for technology transfer, ISIS Innovation. Throughout the whole process, the Foundation accompanies and supports the team very closely in all phases of the process, providing business know-how, management skills and professionalization of analysis and strategy, and seeks to serve the project throughout the contact network that the foundation has developed over its 50-year history. As a result, the Science Fund, initially a fund of €5.5M, has supported five projects which to date have involved an investment of €3M, of which four projects are still running. Two have generated start-ups and the other two are in the commercial validation phase.
