DHL starts expanding its facilities at Vitoria airport

14 April, 2016

Multinational urgent parcel delivery service DHL Express remains committed to Vitoria airport as its operations centre for the Iberian Peninsula. The courier service has begun work to expand its facilities at Foronda Airport, where it will invest 23 million euros.

The expansion work will enable the company to have an additional 7,500 square metres available, taking the total surface area occupied up to 11,100 square metres. Moreover, the new infrastructure will enable automated processing of 21,500 items per hour.

The expansion is part of the company’s strategic plan and responds to the high rate of growth in its activity. The current terminal handled in excess of 3 million kilos last year, a figure that shows an increase of 16% compared to 2014.

Freight traffic through the airport of the capital of Alava exceeded 12,363 tonnes in the first quarter of this year, 20.5% higher than in the same period of 2015, according to data provided by Aena. In the month of March alone, growth stood at 16.8%, with 4,420 tonnes processed. A 10.2% rise in landing and take-off operations was also noted in the month in reference, when 571 movements were recorded.
