4.0 Technologies


In the last three decades, the development of the current Basque industrial fabric has been based primarily on two strategic milestones: the clusters policies and the Basque Science, Technology and Innovation Plan (PCTI).

The clusters have given cohesion to the complexity of production activities whereas the PCTI has provided its commitment to technological development in Advanced Manufacturing as a critical factor for maintaining the competitiveness of industry and its positioning in higher added value niche markets.

Advanced Manufacturing is one of the priorities selected in the Basque Smart Specialisation Strategy (RIS3) and, as such, is reflected in the current Basque Science, Technology and Innovation Plan (PCTI2020).

To deploy the Advanced Manufacturing Strategy - Basque Industry 4.0 - since June 2015 the Basque Country has created a public-private collaboration space in which the main business, scientific-technological and institutional players are designing, developing and implementing joint actions that contribute to the transformation of the Basque industrial fabric.

During the first year of implementation of the Steering Group for the deployment of the Advanced Manufacturing Strategy “Basque Industry 4.0”, the public-private Working Group, composed of clusters and technological players, has performed analysis and prioritization of sectoral technology needs, with the number of sectors consulted in order to perform the analysis corresponding to approximately 60% of Basque manufacturing industry.
